ITIL CERTIFICATION

The ITIL framework is owned by Axelos which maintains the ITIL framework and accrediting training and examination institutes. ITIL provides aspirants a clear focus on understanding concepts of the total cost of ownership (TCO) about Information Technology, therefore helping them understand budgets and returns. The ITIL framework also gives guidance and structure to the overall organization, bringing down chances of unscheduled work overtaking and de-railing current processes. ITIL certifications lend credibility to the aspirants' knowledge of service management best practices, utilizing processes, terminology, etc. that are common in modern IT. The ITIL® certification system lends a structured and modular approach to the framework which is made up of a series of qualifications. Now, each of these qualifications focuses on different aspects of ITIL best practices that can be applied to varying degrees of depth and detail. 

This kind of tiered structure offers candidates the flexibility to pick, choose and focus on different key areas of ITIL.

ITIL has now evolved from ITIL v3 to ITIL 4 transitioning from one scheme structure to the other. Candidates who have qualified for ITIL v3 Foundation can move straight to ITIL 4 Foundation to keep their skills up-to-date. Intermediate candidates also have the option to collect 17 v3 credits to enable them to transition to ITIL 4 with one course and one exam.

Ideal candidates for ITIL certification

  • Anyone with an IT or a management-related role can attempt ITIL certification including service desk staff, technical staff, incident managers, problem managers, business relationship managers, etc.
  • It is most commonly taken up by IT service managers, service support engineers, technical support engineers, and business process owners.
  • Individuals who need to acquire ITIL framework basic knowledge and enhance their IT service management skills gradually.

 

The ITIL Foundation level qualification is open to and can benefit anyone who has an interest in the domain. ITIL‐related qualifications scheme is assigned a specific credit value. Post successful completion of any ITIL Foundation exam, the aspirant will be awarded both the certification and the 2 credits.

What are certification options?

  • The ITIL 4 Foundation certification helps candidates who require a basic understanding of the ITIL framework, want to use ITIL to enhance ITSM or those whose organization has adopted ITIL. Post clearing the exam, the aspirant has the option of two streams depending on his/her career goals: Managing Professional or Strategic Leader.

 

  • ITIL 4 Managing Professional stream provides practical and technical knowledge about how to run successful IT-enabled services, teams, and workflows. There are four courses within this stream:ITIL 4 Specialist Create, Deliver & Support (CDS), ITIL 4 Specialist Drive Stakeholder Value (DSV), ITIL 4 Specialist High Velocity IT (HVIT), and ITIL 4 Strategist Direct, Plan & Improve (DPI). 
  • The ITIL 4 Strategic Leader stream provides learners with an understanding of how IT influences and directs business strategy. There are two modules associated with this stream: ITIL 4 Strategist Direct, Plan & Improve (DPI), and ITIL 4 Leader Digital & IT Strategy (DITS). 

 

  • For the ITIL Master certification, one must be able to explain and justify how he or she has selected and applied a range of knowledge, principles, methods, and techniques from the ITIL Framework and supporting management techniques to achieve desired business outcomes in one or more practical assignments.
